Increasingly, candidates are looking at the bigger picture where they will be working, who they will be working alongside, what their day-to-day role will look like, whether the work feels meaningful, and how the position fits into their life outside of work.

Across our team, we speak with candidates every day about what they are looking for in their next opportunity. While everyone’s priorities are different, there are several themes that consistently come through.

Location and flexibility

Where a person works can have a significant impact on their overall experience.

For some, being close to home and avoiding a long commute is a major priority. For others, being based in a central business district provides the energy, networking opportunities and accessibility they value.

Flexibility has also become an increasingly important consideration. Candidates are often looking for employers who offer a practical approach to hybrid working, flexible hours or working arrangements that recognise that people have commitments outside of the office.

Ultimately, it is less about offering one specific working model and more about understanding what works for the role, the team and the individual.

The team and workplace culture

A great role can quickly lose its appeal if the surrounding team and culture aren’t the right fit.

Candidates want to know who they will be working with, how the team operates and what the wider workplace environment is actually like.

They are often interested in questions such as:

Will I be supported and valued?

Is there genuine collaboration within the team?

Are there opportunities to learn from experienced people?

How does the business recognise and reward its people?

What is the leadership style like?

Will I enjoy coming to work?

Culture can be difficult to define from a job advertisement alone. This is why conversations with a recruiter, hiring manager and potential future colleagues can be particularly valuable when assessing whether a workplace is the right fit.

Duties and day-to-day work

A job title only tells part of the story.

Candidates increasingly want a clear understanding of what they will actually be doing on a day-to-day basis. They want to understand the types of matters, projects, clients or responsibilities they will be exposed to, as well as how much autonomy they will have.

This is particularly important for candidates who are looking to develop their careers. They want to know whether the role will provide opportunities to broaden their experience, take on greater responsibility or specialise in an area they are passionate about.

A strong opportunity isn’t necessarily about having the most impressive title — it is about whether the work itself aligns with what the candidate wants to be doing.

Purpose and career progression

For many professionals, simply having a job is no longer enough. They want to understand where the role could take them.

Career progression, professional development and having a sense of purpose can all play a significant role in whether someone chooses to stay where they are or explore another opportunity.

That might mean having a clear pathway toward seniority or partnership, developing specialist expertise, taking on leadership responsibilities, or simply having access to mentoring and learning opportunities.

Candidates want to feel that their work contributes to something and that their employer is invested in their long-term development.

Work-life balance

Perhaps one of the biggest shifts we are seeing is the importance candidates place on having a sustainable balance between their professional and personal lives.

Work-life balance means something different to everyone. For one person, it may mean finishing at a reasonable time each evening. For another, it could mean flexibility around family commitments, the ability to work remotely, or having the freedom to pursue interests outside of work.

Importantly, work-life balance doesn’t necessarily mean working less. It is about finding an environment where expectations are clear, workloads are manageable and people can perform at their best without feeling that work has to consume their entire life.

So, what really makes a role attractive?

There isn’t a single formula.

For some candidates, career progression will be the deciding factor. For others, it may be the team, flexibility, location or the type of work they will be exposed to. Often, it is a combination of several factors.

This is why understanding what a candidate actually wants is so important when considering a new opportunity. A role that looks perfect on paper isn’t necessarily the right role for every person.

For employers, the takeaway is equally important. Salary and job title will always matter, but candidates are increasingly assessing the complete employment experience — from the people they will work with to the flexibility they will have and the opportunities available to them in the future.

At Fluid Recruitment, we take the time to understand what matters to our candidates beyond their CV. By understanding their career goals, motivations and priorities, we can connect them with opportunities that are not only right for their experience, but right for where they want their career to go.

Looking at your next career move?

Whether you’re actively looking or simply curious about what opportunities are available, having an initial conversation with a specialist recruiter can be a useful way to understand the market and explore what could be next.

What Are Job Seekers Really Looking for in Their Next Role?
