Why a Sideways Step Can Be the Smartest Career Move
In New Zealand’s energy sector, career growth doesn’t always follow a straight line. The reality is that our organisations are smaller and flatter in structure than larger international utilities. This means climbing the ladder often requires taking a step sideways (or two).
The same applies for many industries across the country, especially in regional New Zealand.
For many candidates, this can be an unappetising thought. Particularly for those earlier on in their career with high aspiration, or those with overseas experience in a large employer. Lateral can feel like going backwards, especially in the current climate. But broadening your scope is one of the best ways to build long-term career resilience while also unlocking multiple doors.
A sideways move might mean:
- Taking on a different portfolio of assets to expand your technical knowledge
- Moving from one function to another (e.g. design to asset management) and therefore gaining a greater appreciation for the end-to-end
- Simply taking a similar role with another organisation of a different size or structure
These moves don’t just build capability, they build credibility. When progression opportunities arise, candidates with breadth are often the ones ready to lead. You’ve seen different ways of working, faced a variety of challenges, and been led by more mentors – all of which gives confidence to an ability to perform regardless of what is thrown at you.
The same applies financially. Sometimes short-term stability in salary enables long-term gains in experience and progression. The market from 12 to 36 months ago distorts expectations around this. We saw large and consistent increases in what was an ‘employees’ market. That can no longer be expectation.
We often see the candidates who’ve made one or two of these strategic sideways moves become the strongest contenders for ‘big’ roles. It’s not about always moving up, it’s about moving forward in your career.
