New Zealand Employment Trends: What the Latest Data Means for Employers and Candidates

New Zealand’s employment market continues to evolve, with hiring activity, candidate competition and demand for specialist skills varying across industries and regions.

SEEK’s September 2026 Employment Report provides an interesting snapshot of these changes, highlighting areas of growth, shifts in hiring demand and the increasing influence of artificial intelligence on the skills employers are looking for.

For employers, understanding these trends can help inform recruitment strategies, workforce planning and future capability requirements. For candidates, they offer insight into where opportunities are emerging and which skills may become increasingly valuable.

At Fluid Recruitment, we work across four core divisions: Legal, Engineering, Finance and Construction. Looking at the latest data through these areas provides a useful perspective on what the changing employment landscape could mean for businesses and professionals.

Legal: The continued value of specialist expertise

While hiring activity across the broader Professional Services sector experienced some movement in September, the legal market continues to present opportunities for professionals with specialist expertise and relevant experience.

For legal employers, attracting the right talent remains an important consideration, particularly when recruiting experienced solicitors across specialised practice areas. A strong understanding of candidate expectations, competitive market positioning and opportunities for professional development can help businesses attract and retain quality talent.

For candidates, this reinforces the value of developing specialist knowledge, building strong technical capabilities and remaining open to opportunities that align with their experience and longer-term career aspirations.

Engineering: Strong growth across resources and energy

One of the most notable findings in the report was the 41.4% year-on-year increase in job advertisements across Mining, Resources & Energy, bringing hiring demand close to levels last seen in mid-2022.

This is a significant indicator of demand within an industry that relies on specialist technical capability and experienced professionals.

For employers across engineering and related technical disciplines, increased activity in the resources and energy sector may contribute to competition for professionals with relevant technical expertise, project experience and industry knowledge.

It also highlights the importance of looking beyond traditional candidate pools. Transferable skills, adjacent industry experience and a willingness to invest in professional development may help businesses access a broader range of suitable talent.

For engineering professionals, growth in this sector may present opportunities to apply existing skills to new projects, industries and technical environments.

Finance: The evolving demand for accounting and finance professionals

The accounting and finance landscape continues to evolve, with changing business requirements and advances in technology influencing the capabilities employers are looking for. While SEEK’s September report recorded a 1.3% month-on-month movement in Accounting job advertisements, the broader picture highlights the importance of understanding how demand is shifting across different roles and levels of experience.

For employers, securing the right finance talent means looking beyond technical qualifications alone. Professionals who can combine strong accounting knowledge with commercial awareness, analytical thinking and the ability to contribute to wider business decisions continue to bring considerable value to organisations.

For candidates, this presents an opportunity to build on existing expertise, strengthen their commercial capabilities and explore how their skills can support businesses in an increasingly data-driven environment.

As technology and automation continue to reshape finance functions, professionals who can combine technical financial knowledge with strategic insight, problem-solving and adaptability will be well positioned for future opportunities.

Construction: Responding to changing industry demand

The report highlighted strong annual growth across several industries, including a 16.8% increase in Trades & Services job advertisements and 26.1% growth in Manufacturing, Transport & Logistics.

While these figures do not directly measure construction recruitment, they provide a broader indication of activity across related sectors.

For construction employers, changing demand reinforces the importance of securing experienced professionals with the technical capability and project experience needed to deliver work effectively. Competition for specialist talent can vary depending on location, project pipeline and the level of experience required.

For candidates, continued activity across related industries may create opportunities to apply existing skills to different projects, develop specialist expertise and explore new career pathways.

Regional employment trends: Opportunities beyond the main centres

The report also highlighted notable differences in employment activity across New Zealand’s regions.

Otago recorded the strongest annual growth in job advertisements at 18.6%, followed by Manawatū at 18.0% and Taranaki at 17.1%.

On a monthly basis, Tasman led the country with 2.3% growth, followed by Southland at 1.8% and Otago at 1.7%.

These figures highlight the importance of looking beyond the major centres when considering New Zealand’s employment landscape.

For regional employers, attracting and retaining specialist talent can involve a different set of challenges, particularly where the available local candidate pool is smaller. Access to candidates relocating from other parts of the country, alongside flexibility and a compelling employment proposition, can play an important role in successful recruitment.

For candidates, regional markets may offer opportunities to consider different locations, industries and career pathways.

What does this mean for employers and candidates?

While the latest data highlights areas of growth and contraction, employment trends rarely tell the complete story of an individual recruitment market.

Demand can differ significantly between industries, locations, experience levels and specialist skill sets. A decline in overall job advertisements does not necessarily mean that demand for experienced professionals has disappeared, just as growth in an industry does not guarantee an immediate shortage of suitable candidates.

For employers, the key is understanding the market in which they are recruiting, remaining realistic about candidate availability and ensuring their recruitment processes are positioned to attract the right people.

For candidates, staying informed about industry developments, continuing to build relevant skills and remaining open to transferable opportunities can help support long-term career progression.
